Description

The P-51 Mustangs are a 59 P.A.F. vintage inspired humbucker set. Using 42 ga wire, Nickel Silver base plate, maple spacers, air spacer on the slug side, a cold rolled milled steel screw keeper, and Alnico 4 magnets give the P-51's tight bass response, fat extended mids and clean glassy highs with a great bite. This set responds very well to distortion as well as very clean amp settings and has a very open sound with good string to string definition and amazing string to string balance. Neck is 7.28K and Bridge 8.6K. We had access to 10 different actual '59 P.A.F. sets and found most to have Alnico 2 magnets. Alnico 2 were believed to be the most commonly used but Alnicu 3 and Alnico 4 and alnico 5 were also used. Resistance measured in the bridge was from 8.3 - 8.9k. We like the tonal structure of the Alnico 4 magnets best and decided to use those in this model. Alnico 4 magnets are said to have the warmth of Alnico 2's and the fullness of Alnico 5's. They do have less energy then both the 2's and 5's so we opted for the bridge to have 8.6k resistance. The necks we tested were in similar outputs some were closer to 8k but some were higher. It was common place just to wind the pickups to an approximate number of turns or "until the bobbin is full" point and not as specific to a number of turns as we do today.

We want to have vintage inspired pickup but make them for today's Strings, Effects and Players. Understanding that there were no standards on these PAF's and they tone varied wildly we sought to find the best sets we could that had The Tone and then do extensive testing to create our version for the demands of today's players and environments not just copycat an old set or someone specs. We use 4 conductor leads to give flexibility and use grey for the neck and black for the bridge for easy installation.

5 of 5 P51 Articulate singing tones April 8, 2016
Reviewer: Keith Post from IL United States
Being a long time user of Mr. Allens fine pickups,So I purchased a PRS C22 the pups definitely were not cutting it for me. So I chose the P51s. Man it was like night and day. All 3 toggle positions sang beautiful notes, I hit the coil split and the very little drop in volume still retained note definition and a well balanced top and bottom end, High notes very clear almost violin sounding like a classic guitar should sound. Cleans up very nice when rolling back on the volume,Neck pickup great string definition when rolling back the tone,Im inspired to play whipping post. Got some great stratish sounds in the split-coil mode, very impressed. In the clean channel these pickups really sing, Can't find a pickup that was just ok from David, Every purchase I've made has been right on for my guitars. These pickups will cover a multitude of styles because they are just that good, Cudo's David on consistency and just bad to the bone pickups. BTW My wife even notices the improvement in tones. :)

5 of 5 Les Paul Upgraded to P-51 January 26, 2016
Reviewer: Kevin Winslow from Sugar Land, TX United States
Have a Gibson 2012 Traditional that I have been trying for years to have the sound of 50's style Les Paul. Changed the caps, pots, to the Emerson 50's wiring kit and had Infinity Guitars put in some P-51. What a difference. Very balanced sound and more overall dynamics. Great clean tones and overdriven sounds off the charts. When adjusting the tone knob or either pickup now very responsive. Highly Recommend this pickup. Exactly what I was looking for in pickup.

5 of 5 Best Pickups I've Ever Played! September 15, 2015
Reviewer: Andrew Kumar from California
Thank you, David for making the best sounding pickups I've ever heard. The P-51 Mustang set is extremely warm and clear with this extra sweetness that makes me smile. If you don't know which set of David's pickups to start with, I'd recommend this set.  I'm so in love with these pickups that I'm probably going to be putting a set in 2 other guitars (if not P-51s, they will definitely be one of David's pickups).

5 of 5 A moment in time June 12, 2014
Reviewer: Jamie Harrison from Albuquerque , NM United States
As a session/ tour guy that has to capture the classic Les Paul sound I am thrilled with my David Allen P51s!

They give me the sound I always heard on records.

A great example was when crossroads was requested a LP era Cream/Clapton tune. We did it and the tone was identical!

Whats amazing to me is that the neck captures the round bell like woman tone without getting muddy. DA Pups start with clarity and then add mojo!

Dave offered me a very cool relic cover option that looks just amazing!

This is a pickup that captures your go to reference for a Les Paul sound from Page to Slash this is the one!

Also the Studio Deluxe 50s ice tea LP has the coil tap option and these pups respond excellently to that. One of my favorite sounds is the both pickup selection with either the neck tapped or more commonly the neck full buck and the treble and tap. Totally changes the articulation!

Every hand thats touched the guitar said OMG what pickups are in here it sounds GREAT!
